Perspective VI

A Very English Sort of Day on the California Coast

There are places that make it easy to stay awhile.

The Pelican Inn has become one of those places for us. Tucked into the hills just off Muir Beach, it looks as though it has occupied this little corner of the California coast for centuries. It hasn’t. The inn was built in the late 1970s by Englishman Charles Felix, who set out to recreate a 16th-century English country inn, bringing over old beams, floors, furniture and other pieces from across Britain.

There’s something about that idea that feels familiar to us. Taking the best of England, bringing it to Northern California and letting it find a new life here. It isn’t so different from what we do with tailoring. English flannels, tweeds and heavier wools feel remarkably at home in San Francisco, where fog, wind and cool days give them plenty of reason to exist.

On a cool Marin morning, with a pint on the bar, England doesn’t feel particularly far away.

For Perspective VI, we decided to lean into that idea.

We imagined a late autumn day somewhere on the English coast. A drive through the countryside, taking the long way simply because there’s no reason not to, eventually finding ourselves at a pub near the sea.

Except we’re in Marin.

We took a vintage Porsche 911 out for the drive to the Pelican Inn, following the winding turns of California Highway 1 along the Marin coast toward Muir Beach. The rest of the Tailors’ Keep crew made their way from San Francisco, the South Bay and around Marin, meeting us at the inn for the day. Bags were unloaded, coats pulled on and before long everyone had settled in.

For this edition, we put particular emphasis on clothing made from cloth by Fox Brothers and William Bliss. With roots in the historic woolen mills of Somerset, England, Fox Brothers has been producing some of the world's finest woolens for more than two centuries. From their renowned flannels to richly textured tweeds and heavier woolens, these are fabrics we've long admired and regularly turn to for our tailoring. Paired with Shetland sweaters and layered for the unpredictable coastal weather, the clothes felt perfectly at home at the Pelican Inn.

We started inside with cards at the table and a pint or two. Then came a long lunch, with plates passed around, another round of pints and jackets hanging off the backs of chairs.

After lunch, we headed outside.

A bike ride down the gravel road. A walk across the old bridge. Hank running around the lawn. Coats and scarves pulled on for the walk toward the beach. No particular schedule and nowhere else we needed to be.

We like tailoring best when it becomes part of the day rather than something you have to think about. Jackets come off, layers get added, ties loosen and good clothes get a little lived in. Like the Pelican itself, these are things borrowed from an English tradition that feel perfectly at home on the Northern California coast.

That’s Perspective VI.
